Sustainable Forest Management
What is Sustainable Forest Management?
Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable development.
Sustainably managed forests are carbon neutral, utilising the ‘mosaic effect’ in which the growth of trees over a large area will compensate for the carbon lost through logging.
In a sustainably managed forest, the carbon released through harvesting is offset by that which is taken up through regeneration and re-growth, making these forests carbon neutral.
This is a key example of ‘carbon offsets’.
Forests are recognized as important renewable energy resources for addressing global warming therefore deliver
long-term sustainable benefits.
